One island holds the whole ladder: the beach breaks at Canggu where most of the world's beginners actually stand up, and an hour south the Bukit reefs — Padang Padang, Bingin, Uluwatu — where the same coaches take you once you can.
Surfing was born among the Polynesians, and in Hawaii it ran deep through life, faith and rank. Hawaiians called it heʻe nalu, wave sliding. The first European account comes from Captain Cook’s 1769 voyage, when Joseph Banks watched Tahitians ride the surf on the stern of an old canoe. In the summer of 1914–15 the Hawaiian Olympic swimming champion Duke Kahanamoku rode a board at Freshwater and Manly in Sydney, and the craft took root on another continent. Today Hawaii still crowns the season: the World Surf League’s Championship Tour ends each December with the Pipe Masters on Oahu’s North Shore. In Europe the tour stops at Supertubos in Peniche, Portugal, and Ericeira, just down the coast, became Europe’s first World Surfing Reserve in 2011.
Learn where most of the world's beginners stand up, and stay for the reefs
The strength here is that the same coaches take you the whole way, from the beach breaks to the reefs an hour south — someone above you and someone below you in one island, which is what the dots are reading. ⚠ No outside body designates anything here and nobody has counted the cohort: this one rests on our own reading of the schools' own pages.

There is a real difference between a school that teaches you and a good-looking website, and too much of the internet is the second kind. Four instruments do the work, and every one of them is visible on the page you are already on.
If a place dodges these, that's your answer. It costs you nothing to ask, and it tells you everything.
This is the short version. The full method is here — the six questions, in order, for any craft anywhere.
